Paramahansa Yogananda

Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda was born in Gorakhpur to a devout Bengali family. He went in 1920 to the United States as India’s delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals. That same year he founded the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) to spread the teachings of India’s ancient practices and philosophy of yoga, and its tradition of meditation, internationally. In 1924 he embarked on a transcontinental speaking tour and garnered many celebrity followers in the process, including soprano Amelita Galli-Curci, tenor Vladimir Rosing, and Klara Clemens Gabrilowitsch, daughter of Mark Twain. Yogananda was the first yoga teacher and Hindu teacher to live in the United States for a majority of his life. Paramahansa Yogananda, in March 1952, entered mahasamadhi, and is entombed in Palo Alto, California.
